How law firms read a paralegal resume

Lawyers hire paralegals to give time back. They look for someone who can draft accurately, manage deadlines, find the right documents and never miss a filing. In the first scan, practice area matters most: a litigation team wants discovery and bundles, a corporate team wants entity records and due diligence, a family team wants client sensitivity and court forms.

Precision signals competence. Typos, inconsistent formatting or vague bullets create doubt immediately, so edit as if the resume were a court document. Use a conservative layout, a clear structure and consistent dates.

Describing work without breaching confidentiality

Confidentiality limits what you can say, but it does not prevent useful detail. Describe matter types and volumes without naming clients: supported thirty active commercial disputes, prepared hearing bundles of over a thousand pages, or managed the filing calendar for a team of six. Name the systems you used, such as case management, e-filing, document review and research platforms.

Show the progression of your responsibility. Did you start by organising files and progress to drafting first versions of documents, preparing witness statements or supervising a junior? This shows trust, which is what a supervising lawyer values most.

Research, writing and deadlines

Legal research and writing are core skills. Mention the databases you can use, the kinds of memos you produced and your experience cite-checking. If you can summarise lengthy documents clearly, say so, since that is a daily need.

Deadlines are the paralegal’s defining pressure. A line about maintaining court calendars without a missed deadline, or building a tracking system, is worth more than any adjective. Add qualifications, relevant coursework and languages, and keep the resume to one or two pages depending on seniority.
