Why trust comes before everything else

Whoever hires a cleaner is handing over access to a home, an office or a hotel floor. They are therefore screening for trust before they look at skills. References, long periods with one employer, and a record of working unsupervised all count heavily. If you have cleaned the same properties for years, say so, because longevity is the best proof of reliability you can offer.

Be clear about the type of cleaning. Domestic, office, hotel rooms, healthcare, school and industrial cleaning follow different standards and use different equipment. Matching your experience to the posting makes it easy for an employer to imagine you in the role.

Standards, equipment and safety

Quality is judged against standards. In hotels this means a room inspection; in offices a checklist; in healthcare strict infection-control procedures. Mention the standards you worked to and how often you passed inspections. If you handled specialist tasks such as carpet extraction, floor scrubbing, window cleaning or deep cleans, list them individually.

Safe use of chemicals and equipment is a legal and practical concern. Note any training in handling cleaning products, manual handling and correct use of machines. Employers want people who will not injure themselves or damage surfaces, and training certificates make that credible.

Availability, independence and presentation

Cleaning work is scheduled around other people, so early mornings, evenings and weekends are common. State the hours you can work, and whether you have your own transport if sites are spread out.

Many cleaners work alone, so independence is a selling point: managing your own time, keeping to a schedule and reporting problems such as damage or low supplies. Keep the resume short, plain and well-spelt, mention that references are available, and consider adding a line about being comfortable with keys and alarm codes if you have held them.

  1. Choose the premises type that matches the posting and put it first.
  2. Mention supervised-key or sensitive-area trust if the role involves unsupervised access.
  3. Add shift patterns, such as early mornings or evenings, since cleaning contracts are time-bound.
  4. Name machines or products if the ad lists them.

Frequently asked questions

What skills should a cleaner list?

Cleaning methods, equipment use, chemical safety, checklists, laundry and reliability. Add specifics for the premises type.

How do I get a cleaning job with no experience?

Highlight reliability, attention to detail, physical stamina and any household or volunteer cleaning. Many employers train in their methods.

Should I list references?

For domestic and trust-based roles, mention that references are available and have them ready.

Should I mention cleaning products I know?

Only if the posting asks for them or if they are specialised, such as healthcare-grade disinfectants.

How long should the resume be?

One page. Keep it to the premises you have cleaned, your reliability record and any chemical-safety training, since an employer deciding on a cleaner reads very little beyond that.

How do I show trustworthiness on a cleaning resume?

Mention keys or alarm codes you have been trusted with, long-term clients, repeat referrals and that references are available. Trust is the main thing households and offices are buying.

Is it worth listing different types of cleaning?

Yes, if you are applying across sectors. A hotel, an office and a private home each need different pace and standards, so show the ones you have done and put the closest match first.
