Should You Put a Photo on Your Resume? A Country-by-Country Guide

In some countries a photo is a normal part of a CV. In others it can count against you, because employers want to avoid appearance-based bias. The right answer depends on where you apply and the norm of the industry.

Usually leave it out

In the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, resumes typically do not include a photo. Employers often prefer not to receive one, to avoid bias and legal risk. Adding it can even make an application harder to process.

Common or accepted in many places

In parts of continental Europe, Latin America and Asia, including Spain, France, Italy and Germany, a photo has traditionally been common on CVs. In some of these, such as Germany, it is increasingly optional. In hospitality, front-of-house and some creative roles it is more usual.

Customs change, so check recent examples from the employer or industry, and follow the job posting if it says anything on the subject.

If you include one

  • →Use a recent, high-quality headshot with a plain background.
  • →Dress as you would for the interview.
  • →Face the camera with a natural expression.
  • →Crop to head and shoulders. Keep the photo small.
  • →Avoid selfies, cropped group photos or filters.

Photos and applicant tracking systems

Software ignores images, so a photo does not help or hurt parsing. Just make sure your name and contact details are real text and not part of an image.
