What is a resume summary?

A resume summary is a 2–4 sentence paragraph at the very top of your resume, directly below your name and contact details. It's a snapshot of who you are professionally — your experience, your strongest skills, and what you bring to the role.

Think of it as your answer to "tell me about yourself" — but condensed into 50 words and placed where a recruiter will see it in the first second of scanning your resume.

⚠️ Resume summary vs resume objective

A summary focuses on what you bring to the employer. An objective focuses on what you want. Use a summary unless you have no experience at all — objectives are largely outdated and put the focus in the wrong place.

What makes a great resume summary?

The best resume summaries share four qualities:

Specific, not generic: "Experienced professional with strong communication skills" describes approximately everyone. "Senior product manager with 6 years in B2B SaaS, specialising in growth and retention" describes you.
Achievement-led: Lead with a result if you have one. Numbers command attention: "reduced churn by 22%", "managed £5M portfolio", "grew team from 3 to 12."
Keyword-rich: Include the job title and 2–3 key skills from the job posting. ATS systems scan your summary heavily — this is prime keyword real estate.
Short: 3–4 sentences maximum. If you're writing more than that, you're burying the good stuff.

The formula for writing your own

Sentence 1[Job title] with [X years] of experience in [industry/specialism].
Sentence 2Key achievement: [what you did] that resulted in [measurable outcome].
Sentence 3Core skills or qualifications most relevant to this role.
Sentence 4 (optional)What you're looking for or what you bring to this specific employer.

One critical thing: tailor it every time

A generic summary is almost as bad as no summary. The most effective resume summaries are tailored to the specific job you're applying for — using the job title and key terms from that posting.

This is also what makes your resume rank higher in ATS systems — a summary that mirrors the job description's language signals immediate relevance.
