How to Write a Cover Letter in 2026: Structure, Examples and Tips

A cover letter is your chance to explain why this role and this company, in your own words. It does not repeat your resume. It connects the two, so the reader sees why you are a fit before they open the rest of your application.

The structure

  1. Greeting: use a name where you can find it. Otherwise, Dear Hiring Team.
  2. Opening: say the role you are applying for and one sentence on why you are a strong fit.
  3. Middle: two short paragraphs. Pick two or three things the job needs and show evidence from your experience.
  4. Why this company: one or two sentences that show you have done your homework.
  5. Close: say you would welcome a conversation and thank them.

An example you can adapt

Dear Hiring Team, I am applying for the [role] position at [company]. With [X] years of experience in [field], including [achievement], I believe I can help [team] achieve [goal]. Length and tone

Aim for 250 to 350 words, never more than one page. Write the way you speak at your best: clear, specific and professional. Avoid clichés such as I am a hard-working team player.

Mistakes to avoid

  • →Sending a generic letter with another company name left in.
  • →Starting every sentence with I.
